Subject: Fellowship at Heritage Conservation Centre, Singapore
Conservation Fellowship (Paintings) Heritage Conservation Centre, Singapore The Heritage Conservation Centre has established a Conservation Fellowship to be awarded annually for projects that will contribute to the research into the National Heritage Board (NHB) Collections. Applications for the Conservation Fellowship are currently being sought from individuals with a background in paintings conservation and/or conservation science. The goal of the 2010 fellowship will be to conduct research into the painting techniques, materials and practice of Singapore artist Liu Kang (1911-2004) and the most suitable methods for the conservation of his paintings. The NHB holds a collection of over 1,000 paintings by Liu Kang, of which 134 are oil paintings. Many of the oil paintings show bad degradation phenomena, which seem to be associated with the painting materials and their response to Singapore's tropical climate. The results of the research will influence conservation treatments and approaches for a retrospective exhibition on Liu Kang in mid 2011 at the Singapore Art Museum. Fellow will be expected to undertake preliminary literature review on artist literature and the behaviour of painting materials in tropical climates, carry out the examination of all Liu Kang's 134 oil paintings in the NHB collections and in other collections when appropriate, undertake materials study and analysis in collaboration with outside laboratories when required, and proposals for the conservation of the Liu Kang collection. Fellow will be expected to write out a final research report and a conservation paper at the end of the fellowship. The fellowship will be awarded for any 6-month period between Sept/Oct 2010 and end of March 2011. A stipend of S$21,000 plus a travel allowance will be offered for the fellowship period. Eligibility: Applicants should be graduates of a recognized graduate-level program in conservation, with a specialization in paintings. A proven record of research and writing ability, as well as English-language skills, is required. Demonstrated knowledge of conservation principles, chemistry and museum practices.
