Object Conservator, James Watt's Workshop
Science Museum, London

Salary: UKP20,400 - UKP24,000 per annum pro-rata depending on
knowledge and skills

9 month Fixed Term Contract

The Science Museum was founded in 1857 with objects shown at the
Great Exhibition held in the Crystal Palace. Today the Museum is
world renowned for its historic collections, awe-inspiring galleries
and inspirational exhibitions. The new Watt's Workshop display will
centre on the attic workshop of the renowned engineer James Watt.
After his death in 1819, this fascinating time capsule of
inventiveness was preserved in its entirety, and transferred to the
Science Museum in the 1920s. The exhibition will explore manual
creativity, science and business and aims to inspire whole new
generations of James Watts by linking to new close-to-market models.

The Science Museum is seeking a flexible and enthusiastic object
conservator who will support the Museum's exhibitions programme. The
position is primarily to assist with the conservation of objects for
the Watts Workshop project, but will also assist with other projects
and loans as required.

We are looking for a confident, outgoing professional to provide
high quality interventive conservation.

Your recognised conservation qualification or similar experience
will be supported by demonstrable skills in interventive and
preventive museum object conservation across a broad spectrum of
materials. Experience working with collections documentation and
object movement is an advantage.

You should be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and execute
your own work programmes and promote and high conservation
standards. The ability to use databases and image manipulation
software and practical expertise in risk assessment and COSHH will
be essential.
