Object Conservator, James Watt's Workshop Science Museum, London Salary: UKP20,400 - UKP24,000 per annum pro-rata depending on knowledge and skills 9 month Fixed Term Contract The Science Museum was founded in 1857 with objects shown at the Great Exhibition held in the Crystal Palace. Today the Museum is world renowned for its historic collections, awe-inspiring galleries and inspirational exhibitions. The new Watt's Workshop display will centre on the attic workshop of the renowned engineer James Watt. After his death in 1819, this fascinating time capsule of inventiveness was preserved in its entirety, and transferred to the Science Museum in the 1920s. The exhibition will explore manual creativity, science and business and aims to inspire whole new generations of James Watts by linking to new close-to-market models. The Science Museum is seeking a flexible and enthusiastic object conservator who will support the Museum's exhibitions programme. The position is primarily to assist with the conservation of objects for the Watts Workshop project, but will also assist with other projects and loans as required. We are looking for a confident, outgoing professional to provide high quality interventive conservation. Your recognised conservation qualification or similar experience will be supported by demonstrable skills in interventive and preventive museum object conservation across a broad spectrum of materials. Experience working with collections documentation and object movement is an advantage. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and execute your own work programmes and promote and high conservation standards. The ability to use databases and image manipulation software and practical expertise in risk assessment and COSHH will be essential.
