This intensive seminar will run over one and a half days 18-19 June
2010. It is designed for conservators and conservation architects to
further their understanding of different timbers used on furniture
and architectural joinery and the macroscopic and microscopic
identification of a range of European wood species. The lectures
combined with a variety of practical exercises will be delivered in
a tutorial style. This short course is offered by The Institute for
the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in Ireland (ICHAWI)
in collaboration with GMIT Letterfrack and Connemara West.

The seminar will be conducted by Dr. Angelika Rauch, art historian,
cabinet maker and conservator/restorer of wooden objects. Angelika
is a lecturer in Furniture Conservation and Restoration as well as
Design and Technology Education with GMIT Letterfrack since 2002.

Topics covered amongst others:

    Basic wood anatomy
    Macroscopic wood identification methods
    Use of identification keys
    Practical exercises in identifying timber using microscopes and
    sample slides

Participants will have the opportunity to explore historic and
current examples of exemplary furniture making through guided tours.

Fee: 150 Euros including coffees/teas/scones on both days as well as
lunch on Friday.

Places are limited to 12 participants so early booking is essential.
