Conservation science position
(Sabbatical replacement)

The Department of Art at Queen's University is inviting applications
for a four-month sabbatical replacement position in conservation
science in the Art Conservation Program, from September 1, 2010 to
December 31, 2010. We are looking for an experienced individual with
a demonstrated commitment to excellence in conservation with
particular expertise in conservation science. This position involves
delivery of lectures in graduate-level courses, the supervision of
seminars and research projects for graduate students in art
conservation and the supervision of the conservation science
laboratory. Course details are listed below.

The successful candidate will hold an MSc degree, or preferably a
PhD, in one of the sciences or engineering disciplines with
additional research experience in conservation science. Some
administrative experience would also be an asset in addition to
Canadian certification as an x-ray fluorescence user.

The Art Conservation program offers a Master of Art Conservation
degree (MAC) and interacts with fine arts (BFA) and art history (BA,
MA, PhD) programs, all within the Department of Art.  Further

Course details

  ARTC-801
  Conservation Principles

    A general survey course dealing with various aspects of
    conservation and museology. The course deals with professional
    ethics, control of the factors causing deterioration and with
    preventive conservation including care in handling, transporting
    and storing cultural property. Half course; 1 term-hour; fall
    and winter; 25% teaching responsibility. Expected enrollment:
    12.

  ARTC-808
  Instrumental Methods of Analysis

    This course is designed to give an understanding of selected
    instrumental methods of analysis used in art conservation.
    Aspects covered include the fundamental principles underlying
    the techniques, the instrumentation, and the practical
    applications and limitations. The principles of colour and light
    will also be covered. There will be lectures and laboratory
    demonstrations. Half course; three term-hours; fall; 100%
    teaching responsibility. Expected enrollment: 11.

  ARTC-898
  Research Project

    Research will be carried out in consultation with and under the
    guidance of the instructor.Each student will conduct a research
    project and produce a written report. Students will need to
    obtain the instructor's permissionto pursueresearch in an area
    relevant to the field of art conservation.The course will
    include oral presentations and formal reports. Half course;
    seminar format; fall; on campus; 100% supervisory
    responsibility. Expected enrollment: 11.
