Several high profile fires at heritage sites, including Uppark,
Hampton Court and Windsor, have led organisations to consider their
procedures in the event of such an emergency. The Salvage Team,
based at Hampton Court Palace, has valuable experience through its
involvement at the fires at Hampton Court in 1986, Windsor in 1992
and Buckingham Palace in 2002, and has become a model used by other
institutions both nationally and internationally. The team is
trained in the rescue of works of art, with monthly exercises, many
of which involve local Fire Brigades, and working alongside the
other emergency services. However, it is an ever changing
environment, and the team and its procedures is constantly evolving.

Christopher Stevens is Superintendent of the Royal Collection,
Hampton Court Palace, responsible for all works of art there and at
Kew Palace. He is also head of the 14 strong Salvage Team making his
job, effectively, a 24 hour one, especially as he lives on site to
facilitate the position. He joined the Royal collection in 1998
before which he worked as a Production Engineer in the Defence
Industry.
