Can we relax yet? Assessing the Risks to Library Collections and Operations National Agricultural Library Abraham Lincoln Building 10301 Baltimore Avenue Beltsville, MD 20705-2351 Thursday, June 24, 2010 8:30 am - 4:45 pm On June 24, 2010, The National Agricultural Library will host a workshop on risk assessment as part of the Library of Congress Federal Library and Information Center Committee's Safety Net series. Co-sponsored by NAL, FLICC, the Library of Congress Preservation Directorate, and LYRASIS, the workshop will present a practical approach to risk assessment. Tom Clareson, Senior Consultant for New Initiatives at LYRASIS and expert on emergency preparedness for cultural institutions, will present an overview of risk assessment for collections. Jeanne Drewes, Chief of Binding and Collections Care at the Library of Congress and an authority on the valuation of collections, will discuss insurance and self-insurance for federal libraries. Barclay Ogden, Director for Library Preservation at the University of California-Berkeley and 2009 recipient of the ALA-Banks/Harris Preservation Award, will introduce a new automated model which assists in evaluating risks to collections and setting priorities for implementation of controls to reduce risk. The workshop will also include an exercise on conducting a needs assessment survey and will conclude with a tour of the National Agricultural Library. Although not part of the ALA annual conference program, we hope the date and location are convenient for those of you traveling to Washington D.C. for the conference.
