Continuing Professional Development Courses West Dean College Chichester, West Sussex, England Cleaning Masonry Buildings 21-24 June 2010 Course leader: David Odgers Building cleaning has developed as an industry over the past forty years. During this period there have been failures and successes as the industry and specifiers have made mistakes and gained by experience. Even today, however, damage and disfigurement due to poor cleaning specification and execution is commonplace. The issue of the BS Code of Practice No 8221 on Cleaning and Surface Repair is an important development in the understanding and control of cleaning practices, but needs to be coupled with sound practical instruction. This course provides, over an intensive 3-day period, a good understanding of commercial and specialist techniques available to enable sensible and informed specifications to be prepared with realistic costs. During the course participants will see demonstrated and will be shown how to use and apply a wide range of washing, mechanical and chemical cleaning techniques and will be instructed how to programme and carry out essential surface repairs. Materials studied will include a wide variety of building stones, bricks and terracotta. Fully inclusive residential course fee: From UKP564. Preventive Conservation 28 June-1 July 2010 Course Leaders: Linda Bullock and Helen Lloyd This course will equip participants with the current knowledge of factors which affect the integrity of materials in collections, how to assess and prioritise those risks and develop ways to mitigate them, appropriate to the collections and available resources. The topics covered will include monitoring and control of the environment, light and lighting, gaseous and particulate pollutants, biological agents (mould and pests) and the mechanical damage resulting from handling, routine cleaning and the visitors themselves. The course will include plenty of hands-on practical sessions with the latest equipment and opportunities to exchange ideas and experience. Fully inclusive residential course fee: From UKP459. Care and Conservation of Historic Floors 11-14 October 2010 Course Leader: Jane Fawcett This course will give a rare opportunity to hear from experts about some of the problems created by the steady erosion of all types of historic floor and to consider some of the solutions available for their protection and conservation. We are all aware of the damage inflicted by daily use on decorative pavements. We know the contribution made by mosaics, tiles, parquetry, marble, stone, ledger stones and engraved slabs to a historic interior whether ecclesiastical or secular. We are all concerned about the options of partial repair, cleaning and conservation in situ, or of total replacement. The extent of the loss of historical evidence, particularly in ecclesiastical buildings is, however, little understood, and the methods of recording it are often inadequate. In many cases it is now too late, and the destruction has been total. On this course, leading authorities will attempt to answer some of these questions, to weigh the demands of tourism against those of conservation, and to provide examples of what has been done, and how, where and when. Fully inclusive residential course fee: From UKP564.
