Senior Lecturer in Conservation
University of Gothenburg

University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Science, Department of
Conservation, announces an available position as Senior Lecturer in
Conservation, particularly conservation of cultural heritage objects

The Department of Conservation at the University of Gothenburg
offers professional degrees and research programs that address
cultural heritage issues including: urban environments, landscapes,
buildings, gardens, and objects. At the Mariestad campus, the
department offers university degree programs in traditional building
craftsmanship, garden handicraft, and landscape conservation. At the
Gothenburg campus, programs are offered in conservation of cultural
heritage objects and in building preservation.

A professional conservator requires a broad expertise that
incorporates knowledge from diverse fields in the natural sciences,
humanities, and social sciences. Moreover, the professional practice
of preserving and fostering our cultural heritage requires special
practical expertise in documentation, interpretation, and analysis.

The Department is in a development phase where the interaction
between the department's various specializations, and between
education and research, as well as outreach involvement with the
surrounding community, both nationally and internationally, are
important components.

Responsibilities: Undergraduate teaching at entry and advanced
levels with a special responsibility for the program in conservation
of cultural heritage objects. Planning and management tasks within
the conservation program. Teaching within the department's other
program specializations and course offerings, and developing
collaboration with other related areas in the department. Research
and development within the subject area of conservation.
Collaboration with sectors outside the university especially
cultural preservation institutions, both nationally and
internationally. Tutoring and teaching at the postgraduate level.

Qualification requirements: The qualification requirements as stated
in the Higher Education Ordinance are applied for the position. An
additional requirement is ability to teach in Swedish and English.
The successful applicant is expected to teach in Swedish after 2
years.

Assessment: Teaching skills and professional experience in the
conservation of cultural heritage objects will be weighted equally
in the evaluation of the applicant's skills. In the assessment of
teaching skills, particular emphasis will be placed on experience in
planning, organizing and managing courses and proven experience of
teaching and supervision within the subject area of the position.
The Swedish conservation training program works closely with the
cultural heritage sector and other public institutions;
consequently, a good knowledge of the Swedish heritage sector and
labour market for conservators is important. In the assessment of
professional skills in conservation, particular attention will be
given to qualified and extensive knowledge of and experience with
conservation and other cultural heritage preservation issues. An
important merit besides relevant specialization of the successful
candidates is knowledge and experience in the field of preventive
conservation.

Scientific skills, after teaching skills and professional
experience, are the second most important basis for assessment. In
their assessment, special emphasis will be placed on proven
scientific competence within the subject area of the position.
Experience beyond professional boundaries and/or interdisciplinary
collaborations such as personnel management or outreach to
stakeholders in the wider community are subsequently of importance
to the assessment of a candidate's competence.
