Job Description and Responsibilities

This position is vital to the Indiana State Library and the
Commission on Public Records, as well as to the citizens of Indiana.

The Conservator is responsible for the planning, implementation, and
administration of the conservation initiatives for the Indiana State
Library and Indiana Commission on Public Record's general and
special collections.  This position will provide professional
expertise in determining the proper course of treatment for library
and archival materials in need of conservation/treatment. Incumbent
supervises staff, interns and volunteers involved in preservation
activities. Goals and objectives are attained within an environment
of elevated responsibility, and in support of broader institutional
goals and vision.

     Develops and implements (in consultation with State
     Archivist/Deputy State Librarian) conservation initiatives
     designed to meet the conservation/preservation needs of ISL and
     ICPR. Working closely with members of both agencies, incumbent
     plans, prioritizes, and accomplishes treatment goals.

     Provides condition assessment for individual collection items
     from both general and special collections. Develops set of
     treatment options and specification guidelines in careful
     consideration of available resources, collection context, and
     use patterns. Conducts collection-level condition assessments.

     Coordinates preventive conservation activities in such areas as
     environmental control, emergency planning and response, and
     integrated pest management.

     Manages in-house conservation laboratory. Responsible for the
     selection of appropriate conservation supplies, tools, and
     equipment; maintenance of tools/equipment and establishment of
     quality control procedures to verify the adherence of products
     to standards. Evaluates and improves efficiencies of workflow
     while ensuring treatments meet AIC standards and safe lab
     protocols.

     In collaboration with the State Archivist/Deputy State
     Librarian, manages outsourcing of conservation treatments that
     cannot be performed in house. Responsible for coordination of
     projects with curators and collection managers, selection of
     professional services, and authorization of treatment.
     Maintains treatment documentation files.

     Trains staff in specialized conservation procedures, quality
     standards, and lab protocols. Evaluates training needs and
     assists staff in acquiring the skills, knowledge and
     competencies needed to improve job performance.

     Participates in the evaluation of preservation technologies and
     in assessment of their appropriateness for ISL and ICPR.
     Maintains a current awareness of conservation principles and
     practices as they apply to library and archival materials, and
     develops and tests new treatment procedures and approaches to
     problem solving.

     Participates in the development of outreach initiatives for
     care of collections and conservation for Indiana libraries,
     state and local government agencies Sets goals and priorities;
     develops training tools and evaluates progress. Serves as a
     resource to all library/commission staff regarding any
     activities that may have a preservation/conservation impact.

     Participates in the development of standards and policies for
     the preservation of digital materials.

     Performs a wide variety of conservation treatments.

     Identify potential sources of grant funding for conservation
     activities; collaborates with Library and Commission staff  in
     grant writing and other fundraising efforts to support
     preservation programs;

     Participates in Library and divisional planning activities.

     Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Seven (7) years full-time professional experience in
program coordination, development, implementation, or related
experience. Substitution:  Accredited college training may
substitute for up to six (6) years of the required experience.

Additional Comments: Advanced degree in conservation of library and
archival materials; or equivalent combination of education and on
the job training in conservation and preservation, preferred.
