Subject: Symposium on disasters
BlueShield Australia (BSA) and the Disasters ACT Network (DISACT) are holding a symposium on 6 May 2010 at the National Library of Australia (Canberra). Entitled Disaster Proofing Heritage Collections, it will encompass two themes: Regional Disaster Preparedness for Heritage Collections and The Risk Management of Energy-Efficient, Heritage Collection Storage. It will be the highlight event for Blue Shield Australia's annual month-long MayDay campaign to remind the Australian cultural heritage sector to prevent, and prepare for emergencies. The event will also be promoted as part of Information Awareness Month whose 2010 theme is Access across the generations. Both Blue Shield Australia (BSA) and DISACT are committed to the prevention and preparedness planning required to maintain access for as many generations as possible. The symposium target audience are members of the cultural heritage sector, as well as individuals and organisations working in the risk management, business continuity, insurance and salvage recovery sectors. The Symposium will include the launch of several new initiatives: New Letter of Intent on Cooperative Disaster Preparedness between cultural heritage organisations in the ACT. The heads of the major ACT-based cultural heritage organisations will attend and sign it as part of the symposium. Blue Shield Australia and DISACT will launch their new websites Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) will launch their new disaster preparedness guidelines. The afternoon session will be of particular interest to conservators and collection managers given that its focus is on the accommodation of environmental standards for the storage of heritage collections with the needs for increased energy efficiencies.
