ICOM joint interim meeting on training

Training needs for the conservation of modern and contemporary art
Joint Interim meeting of the Training and Education, and Modern
Materials and Contemporary Art (MMCA) working groups of ICOM-CC

June 12-13, 2010, at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht (adjacent
to the Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg) The primary aim of
this two-day Interim meeting of the two ICOM-CC working groups is to
consider and discuss how the existing conservation training programs
are responding to the range of new knowledge and skills that are
frequently required for the conservation of modern and contemporary
works of art. It will build on the two-hour panel discussion
"Rethinking education in contemporary art conservation" that will be
held at the Contemporary Art: Who Cares? symposium (Amsterdam, June
9-11, 2010), although participation in that session will not be a
necessity for the Interim meeting. For the purpose of this meeting,
we are defining "modern and contemporary art" very loosely, from
traditional art forms - such as paintings and works on paper - to
conceptual and installation art; and with an approximate "cut-off
date" of 1910, i.e. art from the last 100 years. The essential
questions to be tackled will be: what steps are training programs
already taking to incorporate modern / contemporary art? What other
steps are planned? And what steps are still required by the
profession? Much of this meeting will take the form of panel
discussion, open debate and break-out sessions (instead of formal
presentations). The full program will be announced shortly, but we
are confident of getting participation from many of the existing
training programs, and contributions are already confirmed from
Lydia Beerkens, Jean Brown, Pip Laurenson, Tom Learner, Christian
Scheidemann, Jill Sterrett, and Sanneke Stigter.

Registration is now open for the meeting.

The cost of the meeting will be Euro 75 (ICOM-CC members and
students), and Euro 95 (all other participants), and will include
coffee and lunches.
