I have not yet found such a resource, but if there is >one, I would not want to 'recreate' the wheel. I believe the following will be of interest to Natasha and others. A group of art conservators (including myself) at the Centre de Conservation du Quebec (CCQ) has developed a database/website (called Preserv'Art). This database was created for artists and museum professionals. It provides them with information about conservation materials and related items such as framing, display, storage, handling, and basic care of collections. It is not interactive like a blog, but can be searched and many people have written questions and comments directly to us which get answered. Preser'Art is bilingual, French and English. The Preserv'Art website mentions the material, its chemical make-up, how to use it, who fabricates or distributes it, etc. You can search by category, use or name of product or even the manufacturer. There is a huge bibliography as well as a fabricator/distributor database and links to other organizations that have useful information online. Moreover, we have additional papers on framing, creating storage boxes, mannequins, etc. There is also a glossary for commonly used terms that help explain terminology used in the files. Information is constantly being added. For more information see <URL:http://preservart.ccq.mcccf.gouv.qc.ca> We need feedback, so please pass on the information and let us know what you think. We look forward to hearing from anyone who has used the website and we welcome all critical comments. Please feel free to contact us through the website or to me off-line, if you prefer.
