The course will be taught by Nora Kennedy and Peter Mustardo, photograph conservators with over 50 years of combined experience working in private practice, at regional centers and within institutional collections. Topics to be covered include the technical history of photographic processes with an emphasis on identification; causes of degradation; proper handling and storage; disaster recovery; and conservation treatment options with an emphasis on issues raised by the bound format. Note: This workshop is geared towards practicing book conservators. At the time of registration, participants are asked to describe their experience in the field and their reasons for wishing to take this course. Nora Kennedy is currently the Sherman Fairchild Conservator of Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City where she established a lab devoted to the conservation of photographs. During her tenure at the Met she has worked on over twenty-eight major and fifty-two minor photography exhibitions and continues to expand the Museum's initiatives in education and research. Ms. Kennedy also serves on the adjunct faculty of the New York University Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center. Nora Kennedy received her Master of Science degree in conservation from the University of Delaware / Winterthur Museum art conservation program in 1986. In 2003 the University awarded her a Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement and in 2006 she was awarded the American Institute for Conservation's Sheldon and Carolyn Keck Award recognizing a sustained record of excellence in the education and training of conservation professionals. Peter Mustardo graduated from Columbia University's Advanced Certificate Program in Preservation Administration. He was an Assistant Conservator at the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House (1978 to 1982), the Head of the Preservation Section at the New York City Municipal Archives (1985 to 1990), and the Regional Preservation Coordinator for the National Archives in Washington, D.C. He established his private practice in New York City in 1982 prior to co-founding THE BETTER IMAGE in 1991.
