Subject: Conference: Conservation of Chinese graphical collections
Conference Conservation of Chinese Graphical Collections Royal Asiatic Society, London 13 April 2010 Our cultural heritage is scattered and shared across continents, subjected to a wide variety of values, histories, cultural attitudes and uses. We are learning that there is much to learn from these different approaches, to increase the potential and choices of conservation methods. Both the traditional and the new contribute to the ways of caring for the collections. Chinese art is becoming increasingly important, both for cultural relations and commercially. The topic is of interest to curators, conservators and collectors. This full day conference provides an rare opportunity to compare these approaches. Expert contributors from both China and Europe describe and demonstrate their techniques, with time for discussion and exploration of the synergy generated. Dr Cheng, a curator and researcher in paper making technques, will set the scene with the collection management and study of an important Chinese museum collection. Contrasting the traditional Chinese conservation techniques with the Western will be the subject of contributions from The British Museum (scroll paintings), Victoria and Albert Museum (export wall paper and Thanka paintings), the British Library (Dunhuang manuscripts) and Artability (book bindings). The attendance numbers have been limited to enable those attending to see demonstration of Thanka conservation techniques. Cost: UKP85, with a discretionary price of UKP70 for students Please email Xuhua Zhan <artability.art<-at->googlemail<.>com> to book your place and arrange payment.
