Date: Friday, March 12, 2010
The Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress announces
the 49th presentation in the Topics in Preservation Series (TOPS):

"Development and research applications for a reference collection of
    20th century photographic paper"
West Dining Room
Madison Building, 6th floor
Library of Congress
101 Independence Avenue SE
Washington DC 20540
Friday, March 19, 2010
10:30-11:30 a.m.

Paul Messier will discuss the contents and the research potential of
his unparalleled reference collection of 20th century photographic
paper. Ongoing characterization studies of the collection, performed
in collaboration with institutions including the Getty Conservation
Institute and the Museum of Modern Art, have already greatly
enhanced the technical understanding of photographic papers. His
research into the photographs of Lewis Hine resulted in a method
useful for dating 20th century photographic papers, and received
coverage from publications including the New York Times, the Wall
Street Journal, ArtNews, the Economist and the Atlantic Monthly.

Mr. Messier is an independent conservator of photographs working in
Boston, Massachusetts. He is an elected member on the board of the
American Institute for Conservation and has served this organization
in various capacities, including chairing the Publications Committee
and founding the Electronic Media Group. He holds an A.B. cum laude
in art history from Vassar College and an M.A. and Certificate of
Advanced Study from the Art Conservation Program at Buffalo Sate
College, State University of New York.

Webcast opportunity: If you would like to participate via webcast,
send email to elin<-at->loc<.>gov three days in advance of the event.

The Topics in Preservation Series lectures are free and open to the
public. The next TOPS lecture, on April 16, 2010, will mark the
occasion of the 50th lecture in the series with a special all-day
event featuring Library of Congress staff. For further details and
