This position provides the opportunity for a Senior Conservator to
work in the Textile Conservation Section of the NGV. The NGV is
Australia's oldest public art gallery with two display venues and an
off-site store. The Textile Conservation section undertakes an
extensive programme for the conservation of textiles and costume in
the NGV collections, predominantly for exhibition in dedicated
galleries for Fashion and Textiles at NGV Australia, and NGV.
International, as well as display within permanent collection
galleries.

As manager of the Textile Conservation section the role includes the
supervision of staff and overall responsibility for the work
programme. The programme of work includes the technical examination,
conservation treatment and display of textiles and costume in the
NGV collections; project co-ordination, managing programmes for the
preventive conservation of the collection, and the provision of
technical advice on handling, transport, and storage of textile
items.

In addition, the successful candidate will participate in
departmental and collection management meetings, contributing to the
overall management of conservation programs at the NGV.

To achieve the purpose of the position, the following attributes are
required:

    A tertiary qualification in the conservation of textiles. Sound
    knowledge of current textile conservation techniques, research
    and publications and an ability to provide authoritative advice
    as a recognised expert in the field of textiles conservation.

    Extensive experience in the examination, treatment and analysis
    of a wide range of costume, textiles and their associated
    materials with a demonstrated ability to supervise, adapt and
    develop treatments.

    Thorough knowledge of the history and technology of textiles and
    costume.  Demonstrated experience in the analysis of costume
    construction, and a working knowledge of historical silhouettes.

    Demonstrated experience in forward planning of work programs and
    an ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks.  Ability to
    effectively liaise and negotiate with key stakeholders regarding
    program planning and development.

    Well developed interpersonal and communication skills in
    relation to liaising with senior management, peers, donors,
    artists, art advisors and other related external contacts and
    members of the public.

    Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, motivate and supervise
    staff and contribute to their professional development. A good
    knowledge of OH&S practices and procedures.

    Demonstrated ability to develop and manage financial resources
    to achieve organisational outcomes in a dynamic environment.
