Description of Work

    The NC museum of history seeks a professional conservator to
    preserve the museum s objects collection. The conservator shall
    be responsible for completing conservation condition reports and
    surveys; making recommendations for treatment; performing
    treatments; making recommendations for the handling, display and
    storage of objects; and for providing consultation to other
    museums and individuals about artifact conservation. Applicants
    must have a general knowledge of nc, southern, and american
    history as well as extensive knowledge of decorative arts and
    material culture; demonstrated experience in all aspects of
    documentation, examination, analysis and treatment of a variety
    of museum artifacts; and knowledge of all standard conservation
    principles and practices. Some night and weekend work and
    overnight travel required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Demonstrated knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry,
    knowledge of equipment needs and safe operations of conservation
    lab, standard conservation ethics, principles and practices.
    Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with
    diverse staff, volunteers, and patrons. Ability to work in
    objects laboratory setting with conservation chemicals. Ability
    to sustain conservation tasks for extended periods of time.

Training and Experience Requirements

    A Masters degree in museum conservation, textiles or museum
    studies which include courses in chemistry, textile or object
    conservation and one-year of experience related to the
    conservation of various metals, alloys, woods, textiles and
    other leathers; or an equivalent combination of training and
    experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited
    institutions.
