Summary: The primary responsibility of the Collections Conservator for the Harvard College Library is to manage a conservation program that ensures the longevity and usability of Harvard College Library's extensive general research collections. Under the supervision of the Head, Conservation Services, this individual manages the daily operations of the HCL collections conservation laboratory, contributes to the development of conservation policies and implements those policies, determines conservation priorities, manages conservation projects, and ensures that Conservation Services supports other critical Harvard College Library objectives. The Collections Conservator for Harvard College Library contributes to the development of preservation policies, procedures, and guidelines throughout Harvard College Library. Typical Duties and Responsibilities: Manages HCL collections conservation laboratory staff and operations, ensuring that treatment standards and protocols are met Establishes and oversees laboratory workflow from all Harvard College libraries Provides collections conservation services for all Harvard College libraries Trains both laboratory staff and HCL staff with other library responsibilities in the care and handling of library materials, identification of damaged materials, conservation techniques and procedures, collections emergency response protocols and techniques Performs a wide range of conservation treatments on HCL circulating print materials Performs environmental monitoring throughout HCL Works skillfully with the Conservation Services management team to ensure an integrated and well-functioning program Establishes priorities and achieves goals; Plans, organizes, and directs workflow in a production setting Supervises ten support staff, interns, temporary conservation positions, and the Collections Conservator Basic Qualifications: MLS and advanced training in conservation acquired through formal graduate studies or a combination of apprenticeship, advanced courses, and internships Minimum of five years of professional conservation experience Minimum of three years of personnel and program management responsibility in a large research library Please see the posting for additional information on the typical duties and qualifications. The HCL collections conservation lab is a state-of-the-art facility occupying 3,400 square feet in Widener Library. It includes areas devoted to preservation review, collections care, conservation treatment, reformatting preparation, and construction of protective enclosures. It houses and makes available a reference library of materials pertaining to book and paper conservation, book binding, book history, library preservation and other related topics. The lab handles all phases of conservation treatment for many HCL collections. Its staff also performs intermediate and advanced conservation treatment and makes enclosures for HCL units. Conservators provide conservation training, surveys, environmental monitoring, and consulting services to HCL units.
