Subject: Classes at American Academy of Bookbinding
Conservation Classes with Don Etherington and Renate Mesmer The American Academy of Bookbinding is offering several different conservation classes this spring in Telluride, Colorado and Ann Arbor, Michigan. In Ann Arbor, Michigan at Hollander's, Don Etherington is teaching two one-week courses, "Restoration of Cloth and Leather Bindings," May 17-21, and "Rebacking of Leather Bindings," May 24-28. Each class offers intensive instruction and hands-on practice in repair and meets 9am-5pm. Following these two weeks, Don will teach two weeks of "Finishing," May 31-June 11, focusing on spine lettering with gold foil and gold leaf using hand tools, tooling using gold and blind techniques, and tooling and simple onlays and inlays on plaquettes. Don Etherington is Director of Conservation at AAB, and founded the Etherington Conservation Center in Greensboro, NC. Renate Mesmer, Assistant Head of Conservation at the Folger Shakespeare Library, will teach "Basics in Paper Conservation," April 19-23 and "Sewing Structures," April 26-30 in Telluride, Colorado. Both classes offer an introduction to conservation and provide in-depth and hands-on study, and are the entry level classes for students wishing to pursue a diploma in conservation. Renate Mesmer is the former Director of the Book and Paper Conservation Program a the Centro del bel Libro in Ascona, Switzerland.
