Temporary Objects Conservators (2 positions) Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Smithsonian Institution 2 East 91st Street New York NY 10128 Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution <URL:http://www.cooperhewitt.org>, is seeking two objects conservators to create custom archival housing supports for fragile decorative arts objects in the permanent collection of the Museum. Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design, with an internationally renowned collection of over 200,000 artifacts spanning twenty-four centuries. This is an opportunity to participate in a project that will have a long-term positive impact on the preservation and accessibility of fragile three-dimensional objects in the collection. The work will be supervised by the Museum's Senior Objects Conservator and will take place at the Museum's newly constructed, state-of-the-art study and storage center located in Newark, New Jersey. The housing project will take place in conjunction with moving the Museum's entire collection into the new storage facility. Private shuttle transportation will be provided from the West Side of Manhattan, Chelsea neighborhood, or free parking will be available at the Newark facility. Temporary Assignment: May 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010 (Eight month assignment) Starting and ending dates may vary. Salary: $25.63 per hour, 40 hours per week. Qualifying Requirements: Candidates will be considered who have a graduate degree from a recognized conservation training program with a specialization in objects conservation, or who have similar training and experience (Bachelor's degree in a related field plus at least three years of equivalent training and experience). Candidates should have experience with preservation storage techniques, knowledge of archival materials, and an interest in preventive conservation. Excellent hand skills are required and demonstrable ability to design and create permanent housing for fragile objects. Because this project is taking place in coordination with the staff involved in a complex move of the collection into permanent storage, candidates should be team players who are creative and flexible. Experience with collection management data bases, such as The Museum System (TMS), is required. The Smithsonian Institution is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
