Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution
<URL:http://www.cooperhewitt.org>, is seeking two objects
conservators to create custom archival housing supports for fragile
decorative arts objects in the permanent collection of the Museum.
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is the only museum in the
United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary
design, with an internationally renowned collection of over 200,000
artifacts spanning twenty-four centuries. This is an opportunity to
participate in a project that will have a long-term positive impact
on the preservation and accessibility of fragile three-dimensional
objects in the collection.

The work will be supervised by the Museum's Senior Objects
Conservator and will take place at the Museum's newly constructed,
state-of-the-art study and storage center located in Newark, New
Jersey. The housing project will take place in conjunction with
moving the Museum's entire collection into the new storage facility.
Private shuttle transportation will be provided from the West Side
of Manhattan, Chelsea neighborhood, or free parking will be
available at the Newark facility.

Temporary Assignment: May 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010
(Eight month assignment)
Starting and ending dates may vary.

Salary: $25.63 per hour, 40 hours per week.

Benefits: Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance; Paid Federal
Holidays; annual leave (8 hours per month) and sick leave (8 hours
per month) and Smithsonian/Cooper-Hewitt discounts.

Qualifying Requirements: Candidates will be considered who have a
graduate degree from a recognized conservation training program with
a specialization in objects conservation, or who have similar
training and experience (Bachelor's degree in a related field plus
at least three years of equivalent training and experience).
Candidates should have experience with preservation storage
techniques, knowledge of archival materials, and an interest in
preventive conservation. Excellent hand skills are required and
demonstrable ability to design and create permanent housing for
fragile objects. Because this project is taking place in
coordination with the staff involved in a complex move of the
collection into permanent storage, candidates should be team players
who are creative and flexible. Experience with collection
management data bases, such as The Museum System (TMS), is required.
The Smithsonian Institution is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Application Procedure: Interested candidates should submit the
following material:

Letter of interest that outlines any relevant experience for the
