Associate Educator and Conservator in Modern and Contemporary Art Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) Maastricht Full time position Salary: competitive starting salary dependant upon experience Salary Scale: 12.0 [VSNU] Euro 50.336,00 - Euro 64.610,00 Closing date: 31 May 2010 Interviews: 14-18 June 2010 The Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) is one of the main conservation studio's in the Netherlands working for public collections within the province of Limburg as well as on a national and international level. Currently SRAL consists of six conservation departments, Paintings, Sculpture, Paper, Historic Interiors, Textile and Modern Art, and is a recognised teaching institute. The Institute is staffed with a dynamic team of international conservators and provides around ten internship placements per year for recently graduated conservators. The conservation studios are housed in a spacious and recently refurbished historic industrial building which also contains a laboratory, photo studio and analytical research facilities. Conservation projects are carried out on traditional paintings, modern works of art, and large projects such as monumental historic interiors both in the studios and 'on-site'. Staff conservators are encouraged to carry out research projects using the facilities available and the Institute is committed to the personal and professional development of its staff. SRAL closely collaborates with the newly established University of Amsterdam (UvA) five year programme in Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage. Around ten postgraduate students from three disciplines, Easel Paintings, Historic Interiors and Modern and Contemporary Art, are hosted for a twelve month period in the SRAL studios where the emphasis is directed towards the further development of practical skills and a deepening of theoretical knowledge through workshops and research. SRAL is seeking a highly qualified, motivated conservator specialised in modern and contemporary art to join the Education Department and the Modern Art Conservation Studio. The applicant will report to the Head of Education, Kate Seymour and will work closely together with the Senior Conservator in Modern Art, Lydia Beerkens and the Head of Conservation, Jos van Och. The applicant must be proactive in collaboration with colleagues and have the ability to communicate effectively, in written and oral form, with a wide range of individuals. The applicant must show a high level of diplomacy and judgement as well as the ability to organise and work in multiple projects simultaneously. Fluency in English is required, while fluency in Dutch is preferred but not essential. Furthermore the applicant should be computer literate conversant with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint and demonstrate general administrative skills. A working ability with digital photography and a familiarity with computer graphic programs is also required. The post involves the academic coordination for the postgraduate programme for the Modern and Contemporary Art (UvA/SRAL) in addition to teaching and the practical guidance of conservation projects undertaken by the postgraduate students within this study discipline. The applicant will contribute to the future maturation of the postgraduate education programme, including the development of symposia, workshops and the initiation of new research projects. The applicant must have practical expertise in the theory and conservation of modern and contemporary works of art and knowledge of preventive conservation practice relating to the care of modern collections. Work experience within the museum sector is desired. As such the applicant must have a Master's level degree in Conservation and prove specialised knowledge within the field of Contemporary and Modern Art. Some teaching experience is desired, but is considered an area in which the applicant can grow. SRAL has strong links with professional organisations and agencies both within the Netherlands and internationally, allowing possibilities for research and enterprise, continual professional development and sharing of best practice. The position offered at SRAL will give the applicant the opportunity for further personal development not only on a practical but also theoretical level within the field of modern and contemporary art. The position is initially intended for a one year tenure starting 1 September 2010 but is offered with the possibility of fixed tenure. The post will be situated in the SRAL studios in Maastricht.
