The Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) is one of the main
conservation studio's in the Netherlands working for public
collections within the province of Limburg as well as on a national
and international level. Currently SRAL consists of six conservation
departments, Paintings, Sculpture, Paper, Historic Interiors,
Textile and Modern Art, and is a recognised teaching institute. The
Institute is staffed with a dynamic team of international
conservators and provides around ten internship placements per year
for recently graduated conservators. The conservation studios are
housed in a spacious and recently refurbished historic industrial
building which also contains a laboratory, photo studio and
analytical research facilities. Conservation projects are carried
out on traditional paintings, modern works of art, and large
projects such as monumental historic interiors both in the studios
and 'on-site'. Staff conservators are encouraged to carry out
research projects using the facilities available and the Institute
is committed to the personal and professional development of its
staff.

SRAL closely collaborates with the newly established University of
Amsterdam (UvA) five year programme in Conservation-Restoration of
Cultural Heritage. Around ten postgraduate students from three
disciplines, Easel Paintings, Historic Interiors and Modern and
Contemporary Art, are hosted for a twelve month period in the SRAL
studios where the emphasis is directed towards the further
development of practical skills and a deepening of theoretical
knowledge through workshops and research.

SRAL is seeking a highly qualified, motivated conservator
specialised in modern and contemporary art to join the Education
Department and the Modern Art Conservation Studio. The applicant
will report to the Head of Education, Kate Seymour and will work
closely together with the Senior Conservator in Modern Art, Lydia
Beerkens and the Head of Conservation, Jos van Och. The applicant
must be proactive in collaboration with colleagues and have the
ability to communicate effectively, in written and oral form, with a
wide range of individuals. The applicant must show a high level of
diplomacy and judgement as well as the ability to organise and work
in multiple projects simultaneously. Fluency in English is required,
while fluency in Dutch is preferred but not essential. Furthermore
the applicant should be computer literate conversant with Microsoft
Word, Excel, and Powerpoint and demonstrate general administrative
skills. A working ability with digital photography and a familiarity
with computer graphic programs is also required.

The post involves the academic coordination for the postgraduate
programme for the Modern and Contemporary Art (UvA/SRAL) in addition
to teaching and the practical guidance of conservation projects
undertaken by the postgraduate students within this study
discipline. The applicant will contribute to the future maturation
of the postgraduate education programme, including the development
of symposia, workshops and the initiation of new research projects.

The applicant must have practical expertise in the theory and
conservation of modern and contemporary works of art and knowledge
of preventive conservation practice relating to the care of modern
collections. Work experience within the museum sector is desired. As
such the applicant must have a Master's level degree in Conservation
and prove specialised knowledge within the field of Contemporary and
Modern Art. Some teaching experience is desired, but is considered
an area in which the applicant can grow.

SRAL has strong links with professional organisations and agencies
both within the Netherlands and internationally, allowing
possibilities for research and enterprise, continual professional
development and sharing of best practice. The position offered at
SRAL will give the applicant the opportunity for further personal
development not only on a practical but also theoretical level
within the field of modern and contemporary art.

The position is initially intended for a one year tenure starting 1
September 2010 but is offered with the possibility of fixed tenure.
The post will be situated in the SRAL studios in Maastricht.
