Marshall Steel third-Year or
post-graduate internship in furniture conservation

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is offering a third-year or
post-graduate internship in conservation, supported by the Marshall
Steel Conservation Internship Endowment. The internship will focus
primarily on treating a body of furniture case work associated with
18th century keyboard instruments in preparation for an upcoming
exhibit. In addition, many different facets of furniture
conservation will be covered, including documentation, structural
and surface stabilization and treatment, and a variety of other
wooden artifact conservation practices. The selected candidate may
also assist with the setup and operation of a new FTIR microscope
and begin building a materials reference spectra database.

The Furniture Lab is uniquely setup adjacent to the Musical
Instruments and the Upholstery Labs, and in the same building as the
Paintings, Objects, Paper, Textiles and Archaeology Labs. The
professional staff also includes Architecture and Preventive
conservators. The internship will provide many cross-disciplinary
opportunities, including working with the Foundation's historic
research scholars and crafts persons in the Historic Trades Program.
Interns in the various conservation labs at Colonial Williamsburg
have traditionally received close attention and have been rewarded
with the opportunity of working with high-quality American
decorative arts collections exhibited in the unique setting of
Historic Area houses, as well as in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative
Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museums.

Candidates should be third-year students or graduates of a
recognized program in conservation. The successful candidate will
have a working knowledge of wooden artifacts and cabinetmaking,
furniture design and history; as well as experience in research,
treatment, documentation, microscopy, and a general familiarity with
professional conservation practices in a museum setting. Good
communication skills are also required.

The internships will begin on or after June 2010 and continue for
one year. An additional year may also be available. Annual
compensation is highly competitive. A travel stipend is included.
