Subject: Ultrasonic descaler for paint removal
I have a case where I'm thinking about using an ultrasonic descaler for the removal of paint layers. The case concerns two 20th century Japanese Shi-Shi where I have to remove all the non-original paint layers. Since I have seen the practical use of the ultrasonic descaler at the conservation institute of Castilla y Leon in Spain, it looks like the results of this device are very promising and less time consuming than removal by hand. I was wondering if someone could share her or his experiences with me because it is hard to find publications concerning the use of this tool in conservation work. I would like to get a clear view on the advantages and disadvantages before buying or renting such a tool. Brand names are also very useful. Furthermore, it should be a device which does not use water.
