Society of Archivists Conservation Training Scheme Chemistry Week University of Sussex 12-15 April 2010 The Conservation Training Scheme Committee is organising an intensive chemistry course for conservators on the above dates. Although primarily organised for trainees on the scheme, the course is suitable for all conservators who would like to improve their knowledge and understanding of the chemistry of materials and treatments. David Dorning will be the lecturer for the week. David is a specialist in book and paper conservation and lectures on his research subject, materials science, at West Dean and at other museums and institutions worldwide. The course is residential at the University of Sussex and will include lectures and lab sessions, as well as all meals and accommodation. Subjects covered: Chemistry and Materials The Molecular view of Materials Cleaning and Organic Solvents Energy, Light and Environment Polymers, adhesives and Consolidants Molarity, Acids and Bases Paper and Acidity Skin Materials and Tannins Iron Gall Inks and Cellulose Degradation Course fees: Members of the Society of Archivists UKP515 Non-members UKP620.
