Several application are able to stitch together several pictures.
They basically try to find common patterns of pixels in contiguous
images and then superpose them.

Usually this is done to obtain horizontal, vertical or equilateral
projections  of the stitched images but I don't see why we can't use
the same proceeding to assemble your puzzle.

Several applications are available, Mac Os, Windows or Unix based

The most used by the stitchers community:

Again these are mainly used for producing panoramas but  the basic
principle could be adapted to your case.

your problem
