Subject: Internships at National Gallery of Denmark
Internships in the Conservation Department at the National Gallery of Denmark Since 1971 the Conservation Department of the National Gallery of Denmark has offered internships that have enabled students and graduates of conservation programmes to participate in the museum's objective to preserve the rich and diverse collections. The Conservation Department comprises three studios caring for paintings, drawings and prints, and contemporary art and objects. The National Gallery of Denmark <URL:http://www.smk.dk> is Denmark's principal museum of visual arts. The aim of the museum is to impart knowledge and appreciation of Danish and foreign art, especially Western art from the 14th century to the present--through collection, registration, preservation, research and education. The museum's collections form the basis for research and general educational activities. The mission of the National Gallery of Denmark is to enrich and move people through art. Interns: Conservation student trainees serve an internship from two to six months in the paintings, drawings and prints, or contemporary art and objects section. The internship program offers students an opportunity to develop and refine their skills through the examination and treatment of works of art under the guidance of professional conservators. Informal discussions contribute to the programme. In addition, the internship will include other museum-related activities. Applications for internships are accepted twice annually: in February for internships starting in June or September, and in October for internships starting in January. The National Gallery of Denmark does not offer any financial support for interns, and external funding is therefore required. The National Gallery of Denmark will offer letters of support for fundraising for the accepted candidate. Requirements and procedures: Candidates for internships should be students of a recognized training programme or have equivalent training. Candidates must have Danish or English language skills. Accepted applicants who are not Danish citizens must provide proof of their own health insurance during the internship period. Internships are given without regard to age, sex, nationality, or race. Candidates interested in applying for an internship should submit the following materials in Danish or English: transcripts of undergraduate and/or graduate courses of academic study; a brief curriculum vitae with biographical information (including language skills, and any publications), current and permanent address, and telephone numbers; a motivation letter (max 1 page, 1500 characters) in which the applicant explains clearly his/her academic and personal reasons for applying for the internship; a copy of the student's previous academic record (courses) and diplomas--if necessary, the candidate must provide a translation into English (this need not be an official translation); two sealed letters of recommendation from conservation professionals familiar with the candidate's work and including the referee's full address; and an indication of financial funding for the period of Internship.
