Summary: This book aims at bringing together all the technological
elements (i.e., manufacturing techniques, surface treatments, firing
methods) that can help scholars and students to better define the
chaine operatoire enacted by the potter during the making of pottery
among ancient Near Eastern societies between the fifth and second
millennia BC. Moreover, it is through visual and X-radiographic
analyses of a high number of shards and completed vessels from
selected sites--such as Cheshmeh Ali, Shahr- i Sokhta, Tepe Rud-i

life-history of the ceramic containers conceived as part of a
broader socioeconomic landscape in which the manufacturing
techniques are interpreted as pivotal for interpreting the
