Subject: Internship at Citywide Monuments Conservation Program, New York
Field Crew Intern Citywide Monuments Conservation Program The Citywide Monuments Conservation Program and New York City Parks and Recreation, Art and Antiquities Department, seek qualified candidates for the 2010 summer field season. These are 40 hour a week paid internships, Monday through Friday beginning Tuesday, June 1, 2019 through Friday, August 13, 2010. The Citywide Monuments Conservation Program conserves and maintains public works of art throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Program participants will gain knowledge of the breadth of the public sculpture collection, its history and conservation needs. The interns will carry out conservation and maintenance treatments on public sculptures and monuments under the direction of experienced monuments conservators. Participants will receive training in photo-documentation, condition assessments, material analysis, and report preparation. In addition, interns will learn and perform conservation treatment methods including repairing, cleaning, patining, and coating bronze as well as cleaning stone, masonry repair, mortar analysis, replication, and repointing, and safety and equipment procedures. This is an excellent opportunity to learn outdoor sculpture conservation with experienced conservators in an award-winning program in New York City. The season will include bi-monthly visits to a bronze foundry, stone quarry, and practicing conservators and artists, in addition to the daily hands-on work. More than 77 students have successfully participated during the last 13 years. Students currently enrolled in graduate programs in objects conservation, historic preservation, or sculpture are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates must be able to work outdoors, be comfortable in handling power tools and equipment, and not fear heights, as projects often require work on scaffolding or in a lift.
