Research Assistant (Heritage Scientist)
The Centre for Sustainable Heritage (UCL)

The Centre for Sustainable Heritage at UCL is seeking to appoint a
Research Assistant, qualified to Second Class or higher Engineering
or Chemistry degree. The roleholder will work on two European
collaborative research projects on the assessment of volatile
organic compounds in the heritage environment (50% of the time) and
on the identification and condition assessment of plastic heritage
objects (50% of the time).

Specifically they will:

    Develop and use spectroscopic methods with chemometric data
    analysis to identify and assess the condition of plastic
    heritage materials and objects

    Develop and use gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric methods
    to quantitatively determine the content of volatile organic
    compounds in the heritage environment, and their effect on
    conservation materials

    Develop sensor applications for volatile organic compound
    analysis

    Work closely with heritage organisations to conduct field trials
    in a number of locations across Europe

    Work within international research teams

    Write reports and research papers

    Manage and maintain the instrumentation needed to carry out the
    work

    Liaise with various stakeholders including the public, heritage
    managers and conservators
