       "Disaster management in the Pacific region is expected to
        reach new heights after the launch of a new tool to help
        link disaster specials and resources through the
        region.Yesterday disaster management specialists from the
        region met at the Suva Holiday Inn for the official launch a
        web-based portal called the Pacific Disaster Net

            <URL:http://www.pacificdisaster.net/>

        "The Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC)
        says the web-based information system would directly help
        National Disaster Management Offices and all disaster risk
        management stakeholders to improve knowledge management,
        planning and decision-making."

        "The new web portal will provide the media and the wider
        public with disaster alerts, such as cyclone warnings,
        tsunami alerts and volcano hazard advisories. It will also
        promote greater regional collaboration and support disaster
        management planning at national and community levels," SOPAC
        said.
