The National Library of New Zealand is undertaking a major building
redevelopment project, and over the next year we will need to pack
and move all of our collections into temporary storage.  We need an
experienced conservation project manager to coordinate the work of
our specialist Conservation team to plan and implement the packing,
transportation, and temporary storage of the heritage collections of
the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the National Library Corporate
Art Collection.  The Alexander Turnbull Library collections focus on
New Zealand and the Pacific, and include a wide range of
collections: 350,000 books; 45,000 rare books; 54,000 printed and
manuscript maps; 140,000 items of printed ephemera; 2,600,000
photographic prints and negatives; 78,000 paintings, drawings,
prints and cartoons; 40,000 discs, tapes and cassettes of recorded
music and oral history; 6 kilometres of newspapers and serials; 8
kilometres of manuscripts; and items of historic furniture,
decorative art objects, and artefacts associated with documentary
heritage collections

The NL Corporate Art Collection includes variety of contemporary New
Zealand paintings, watercolours, prints, sculpture and installed art
works.  These include two large contemporary works:

    Te Wehenga O Ranginui Raua Ko Papatuanuku by Cliff Whiting.
    Currently installed in the main reading room, this work
    incorporates both modern and traditional materials to represent
    some of the demi-gods who govern life in the natural work of
    Maori and are the foundations of Matauranga Maori - Maori
    knowledge.

    New Zealand by John Drawbridge.  Now a feature of the National
    Library entry foyer, this work was created for the 1971 Osaka
    Exposition by the artist, using modern materials such as
    aluminium panels, exterior paints, aluminium and Perspex rods
    with a phased lighting system.

We are looking for someone who:

    Has experience managing large conservation projects-especially
    involving the transport and temporary storage of large
    collections.

    Enjoys working with teams, and has had success in quickly coming
    to grips with colleagues in a new project.

    Is a lateral thinker, able to balance conservation with
    cost-effectiveness, and come up with new ideas to solve
    problems.

    Wants an experience working with fantastic collections, great
    people, and (if you are from overseas) enjoying summertime in
    Aotearoa New Zealand

A relocation allowance is negotiable for the successful candidate,
should that individual be currently living outside of New Zealand.
