This position is located in the Media Assets Unit, Department Of
Conservation, Harpers Ferry Center (HFC), National Park Service,
Charles Town, WV.  The Department operates laboratories that provide
conservation treatment for museum objects and preservation
assistance for the parks.  The incumbent is a professional paper
conservator and a technical authority involving this specialty.

The incumbent of this position prepares technical examination
reports and treatment proposals regarding the nature and extent of
deterioration or other alterations; and the alternatives for
treatment; uses specialized examination techniques such as
microscopy, pH determination, and infrared photography; carries out
technical research, in conjunction with treatments, to better
understand the condition of objects and develop effective treatment
procedures; performs hands-on treatments, which may involve
extremely complex procedures and techniques and a high level of
manual skill; documents treatments according to professional
standards; advises National Park Service staff on effective
preservation methods for exhibiting and storing paper objects; works
with HFC exhibits and historic furnishings staff on paper
conservation matters and participates in the review of exhibit
plans; travels to parks to conduct conservation surveys or perform
emergency treatments; responds appropriately to requests for
information from other government agencies, other professionals, and
the public; participates with other professionals both in the
Service and outside in furthering the preservation of cultural
property; participates as an instructor in workshops, seminars, and
courses organized by parks, regions, the service centers, and HFC;
reviews exhibit plans and drawings; assigns museum objects to
appropriate laboratory for treatment; and coordinates Division
activities with Exhibits and Historic Furnishings staff of Harpers
Ferry Center.
