The University of Canberra: Australia's Capital University has
recently established the Donald Horne Institute for Cultural
Heritage. The work of the Institute crosses the heritage spectrum
from objects and collections to historic houses, intangible heritage
and cultural landscapes. Its role is to teach, conduct research,
collaborate with local, national and international institutions and
to build a network of partnerships with government agencies,
businesses, individuals and communities in the field of cultural
heritage. Central to the work of the Institute will be new cultural
heritage courses and degrees that open in 2009 integrating
conservation science, the humanities, social sciences and
management.

We are seeking an energetic and imaginative teacher, scholar and
practitioner to take a leading role in implementing the new cultural
heritage conservation program and to help manage the University's
collaboration with national and international cultural heritage
institutions.

The Cultural Heritage Conservation program will train conservators
in a unique collaboration between the University of Canberra and the
national cultural heritage institutions: the National Museum, the
National Gallery, the Australian War Memorial, the National
Archives, National Sound and Film Archive, the National Library and
the National Maritime Museum in Sydney. The fields of conservation
practice include: paper and photographs, textiles, machines and
technology, organic and inorganic objects, film and sound,
paintings, indigenous collections, digital heritage and collections
management.

The following attributes are essential: A relevant higher degree,
teaching experience; research capability, knowledge of cultural
heritage institutions in Australia, knowledge of contemporary and
emerging themes in conservation and collections management practice,
highly effective administration, negotiation and communication
skills.

This is a continuing full time position. Written referee reports may
be required.

Appointment Level: The successful applicant will be offered a
position at either Academic B or C level based upon a judgement made
against the selection criteria as to the applicant's level of
experience, and depth and breadth of knowledge and skills to
undertake the duties of the position.

Position Purpose: The appointee will contribute to the teaching
effort of the University in the Cultural Heritage Program, engage in
scholarly and professional activities, conduct research, enhance the
relationship with the Program partners and promote the Program
nationally and internationally.

Duties: Specific duties required of this level include:

    Preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.

    The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations,
    workshops, field excursions and studio sessions.

    Identification and development of teaching material in
    collaboration with colleagues.

    Marking and assessment.

    Consultation with students.

    Convening individual units and overall co-ordination of the
    Conservation program including management of the Practicums.

    Supervision of Honours, postgraduate coursework and research
    students.

    The conduct of research.

    Involvement in professional activities.

    A range of administrative functions in teaching and
    collaboration with Program partners.

    Attendance and participation in Faculty and other University
    meetings and processes.

Selection Criteria:

Qualifications, experience, accomplishments and skills are
considered in regard to teaching, research, experience inside and
outside tertiary education, creative and technical achievement and
contribution to the conservation profession.

Essential (Lecturer Academic Level B):

    Academic qualifications at Higher Degree level or substantial
    demonstrated progress toward a higher degree, or equivalent
    accreditation and standing, and recognised significant
    experience in the relevant discipline area.

    Tertiary teaching experience.

    Demonstrated capacity to design, develop, coordinate and deliver
    high quality teaching material and flexible modes of academic
    programming.

    Demonstrated experience in cultural heritage conservation and
    understanding of emerging themes in the field.

    Established record of research in the field of cultural heritage
    conservation or demonstrated capability to undertake high level
    research.

    Established links with relevant outside organisations of benefit
    to the University and a demonstrated understanding of cultural
    heritage institutions in Australia.

    Demonstrated effective communication, negotiation and
    interpersonal skills and a high level of administrative
    capability.

    Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to implementation
    of equity and workplace health and safety principles.

Essential (Senior Lecturer Academic Level C):

    Academic qualifications at Higher Degree level, or equivalent
    accreditation and standing, and recognised significant
    experience in the relevant discipline area.

    Demonstrated capacity to design, develop, coordinate and deliver
    high quality teaching material and flexible modes of academic
    programming.

    Significant demonstrated experience in cultural heritage
    conservation and understanding of emerging themes in the field.

    Strong record of research in the field of cultural heritage
    conservation or demonstrated capability to undertake high level
    research.

    Established links with relevant outside organisations of benefit
    to the University and a demonstrated understanding of cultural
    heritage institutions in Australia.

    Demonstrated effective communication, negotiation and
    interpersonal skills and a high level of administrative
    capability.

    Demonstrated academic leadership qualities in respect of
    teaching, research, community interaction and professional
