Librarian (Head of Preservation) The University of Maryland Libraries Non-tenured Faculty, Full-Time (12-Month Appointment) Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; comprehensive benefits The University of Maryland Libraries are seeking applicants for Head of Preservation, a library faculty position. The successful candidate will be responsible for a program focused on the preservation of the Libraries' collections in all formats, with responsibilities for conservation, brittle materials, reformatting, digital preservation, binding, and end processing. In addition, he or she will assess and redesign the existing program to meet the expanding needs of the Libraries' unique special collections in all formats, including digital objects. See <URL:http://www.lib.umd.edu> Responsibilities: The Head of Preservation oversees an evolving program for preservation of the Libraries' collections. Responsible for planning, implementation, and administration of conservation/preservation program that encompasses all aspects of material treatments and is concerned with all media and formats (including print, digital, microforms, manuscripts, photographs, realia, and other non-print media). Coordinates and facilitates department activities, facilitates organizational communications, fosters an environment of shared responsibility, and develops and promotes strategic plans and vision. Will assess and redesign the Libraries' preservation program to meet the expanding needs of the Libraries' unique special collections in all formats, including digital objects. Provides leadership through active participation on teams and committees at the production group, division, Libraries, and University level and within the profession. Works under the direction of the Assistant Director of the Technical Services Division. Qualifications and Experience: Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree in library science or equivalent professional degree and experience in the conservation/preservation field. Five years of professional experience in an academic or research library, including two years managing preservation or conservation staff and at least one to three years of progressive experience with digital resources. Training and experience in conservation/preservation treatment, practices, issues, and trends. Demonstrated knowledge of life cycle management of digital assets. Excellent organizational, management, and supervisory skills. Strong public service orientation. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively with administrators, faculty, students, and library staff in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment. Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. Preferred: Demonstrated success in writing grant proposals. Position is appointed to Librarian Faculty Ranks as established by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. Rank at appointment is based on the successful applicant's experience and relevant credentials.
