The main objective is to understand the effect of the face-mounting process, specifically, the release of acetic acid on the condition of face-mounted photographs, including the aging of the photograph itself, and possible changes to the PMMA face-mounting material. Further issues include conditions for storage, and cleaning of the PMMA. The position is available for the period from 1 October 2008 to 31 August 2009. Minimum Requirements This project is being carried out within the framework of a European "Marie-Curie" project, EPISCON, European Ph.D. for Science in Conservation. We are thus looking for candidates with an M.S. which qualifies the candidate for a Ph.D. programme, preferably in chemistry, materials science, polymer chemistry, or polymer science. An M.A. in art conservation from an accredited conservation training programme would be considered if the candidate has significant scientific/technical research experience or background. Due to the rules of the "Marie-Curie" programme, the candidate cannot be a Dutch citizen, nor can he/she have lived in the Netherlands continuously for the past four years. Due to the short-term notice and visa requirements, a citizen of the European Union or EFTA is preferred, but an exceptional candidate from another country will also be considered.
