Fellowship at Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage

From: William Wei <bill.wei<-a>
Date: Wednesday, September 3, 2008
Temporary position/research fellowship in conservation science
Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage, Amsterdam

The Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage is seeking
candidates for an ongoing project looking at issues in the
conservation of face-mounted photographs. The main objective is to
understand the effect of the face-mounting process, specifically,
the release of acetic acid on the condition of face-mounted
photographs, including the aging of the photograph itself, and
possible changes to the PMMA face-mounting material. Further issues
include conditions for storage, and cleaning of the PMMA.

The position is available for the period from 1 October 2008 to 31
August 2009.

Minimum Requirements

This project is being carried out within the framework of a European
"Marie-Curie" project, EPISCON, European Ph.D. for Science in
Conservation. The position, as it now is offered, no longer leads to
a Ph.D. However, the work to be conducted should be at the level
necessary for a Ph.D. programme. We are thus looking for candidates
with an M.S. which qualifies the candidate for a Ph.D. programme,
preferably in chemistry, materials science, polymer chemistry, or
polymer science. An M.A. in art conservation from an accredited
conservation training programme would be considered if the candidate
has significant scientific/technical research experience or
background.

Due to the rules of the "Marie-Curie" programme, the candidate
cannot be a Dutch citizen, nor can he/she have lived in the
Netherlands continuously for the past four years. Due to the
short-term notice and visa requirements, a citizen of the European
Union or EFTA is preferred, but an exceptional candidate from
another country will also be considered.

Compensation: The salary is approximately EUR 2000 per month gross.
In addition, the "Marie Curie" project pays for one trip home for
ex-pats. Limited funding is available for supplies, and travel to
conferences.

For Consideration: Qualified applicants should send
resumes/curricula vitae, and a list of courses and grades from their
university/training programmes to:
