First Announcement and Call for Papers

Crossing Borders: The Conservation, Science, and Material Culture of
    East Asian Lacquer
Victoria and Albert Museum, London
30-31 October 2009

Conference language: English

The conference will examine the science, conservation and material
culture of East Asian lacquer, building on the achievements of the
recently completed Mazarin Chest Project. More specifically it will:

Disseminate internationally the findings of the project, both in
terms of the conservation treatment carried out on the Mazarin
Chest and associated scientific and art historical research.

Set these findings in as broad a context as possible by
involving speakers who have been conducting complementary
research in the fields of lacquer conservation,
    conservation-related science, and material culture.

Identify candidate areas for future research and foster a
network to facilitate the realisation of such research.

The character of the conference implies the involvement of
conservators and conservation scientists, curators, historians and
others. It is hoped that there will be considerable interaction
between related disciplines. Contributions to this conference should
focus on issues that are applicable to the field as a whole, rather
than issues specific to individual objects. The work presented must
be original, previously unpublished research in the field of East
Asian lacquer studies.

Papers presented at this conference will undergo a peer review
process. A committee of experts, co-chaired by Shayne Rivers and
Rupert Faulkner, will make a selection from the abstracts received.
Selected contributors will be invited to submit draft papers. The
Technical Committee will review these drafts and determine the final
content of the programme. Contributors will give a 25 minute
presentation of their work at the conference, in addition to
submitting a 5000 word paper for inclusion in dual language
(English-Japanese) postprints.

Timetable:

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: 30 September 2008

Response from the Technical Committee by 30 October 2008

Deadline for submission of draft manuscripts: 30 April 2009

Final selection of papers and announcement of conference
    programme by 30 May 2009

Presentation at conference: 30-31 October 2009

Deadline for final submission of manuscripts for inclusion in
    postprints: 30 November 2009.

If you would like to present a paper, you may submit a proposal to
Rupert Faulkner or Shayne Rivers.

Abstracts should include:

    An introduction
A list of section headings with a brief expansion on each topic
    A conclusion

Together these should indicate the scope, content and intention of
the finished presentation/paper.

Should illustrations or tables be anticipated, these can be either
described or included if reasonably complete.

The V&A is grateful for the generous support of the Getty
Foundation, a programme of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
