    Book
Art Conservation Department
Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY

Continuing position available starting Spring Semester, January-May
2009. Lecturer would travel to Buffalo twice each semester to
lecture and lead seminars/studio exercises; compensation includes
honorarium, plus travel, accommodations and expenses.

Lecturer gives two two-day seminars each semester, in a two-year
rotation. A lecture of 1 1/2 hours is followed by a three hour lab
or studio exercise. These are scheduled during the semesters on a
Thursday-Friday at the lecturer's convenience. History, technology,
care and treatment of bindings are covered for students who may one
day have books in their care, or who wish to pursue book
conservation as a specialty in the paper conservation curriculum.

Although the lecturer will have considerable leeway in the
presentations, past successful programs have included: a lecture on
the history of bindings coupled with a visit to the rare book room
at the University of Buffalo; a lecture on the history of sewing
styles, with a lab on the construction of a pamphlet and a simply
sewn block set in a case binding; a lecture on the major damages
that occur in books, and how to best support them on display, with a
studio exercise on building book cradles or custom boxes. Over the
course of the lectures and studios, students learn the specific
terminology used for describing books and the special care books
require. Ethics and standards of practice are stressed. Book
conservation students rely on both the lecturer and paper
conservator for supervision of their book conservation projects.

The book lecturer will have full access to a newly re-modeled paper
lab and the support of all the faculty, including our scientists and
imaging specialist, for analysis, research and projects. We have
the ability to augment our materials and supplies for book
conservation as the lecturer wishes.

We are a congenial full-time faculty that shares a commitment to
providing the best instruction possible to our students, and we want
to continue our success in graduating respected book conservators.
We welcome letters of interest in this important position from
conservators who have a passion for books and book conservation,
experience in lecturing or teaching, and an easy manner with
students.
