Project Manager: Collections Storage Renovation San Diego Museum of Man San Diego, California Established in 1915, the San Diego Museum of Man is an anthropology museum with an exceptional collection of over 100,000 objects, nearly 50,000 photographic images and a scientific library of approximately 50,000 volumes. The museum currently occupies the landmark California Building and Quadrangle that were constructed in 1915-1916 as part of the Exposition. These buildings, while historic, provide inadequate storage for the collection. The museum is now beginning a comprehensive, multi-year project to bring the collection storage space up to current museum standards and to create a state-of-the-art facility that provides access to the collection to researchers, scholars, and members of the communities represented in the collections. The museum is seeking a Project Manager to coordinate the project. This first phase will be focused on securing preservation of and access to the organic objects, namely the textiles, in the museum's collection. This is a grant-funded position. Position description: The Project Manager will oversee the storage renovation project ensuring that all projects goals are met on a timely basis and within budget. The candidate will be responsible for developing procedures, supervising all project-related work activities and staff, and ensuring the care of the collection during the move. In addition, the Project Manager will be involved in fundraising to ensure support for the subsequent phases of the storage renovation project. Key responsibilities include: 1) Plan, prioritize, and coordinate all project activities to achieve goals within established budget and on a timely basis; 2) Develop project procedures and work-flow for tracking objects, written and photographic documentation, handling, conservation, integrated pest management, packing, transportation and storage; 3) Manage project staff ; 4) Manage physical move of collections to temporary off-site storage facility; 4) Organize and supervise all project procedures to ensure the care of the collection throughout the storage renovation; 5) Oversee staff health and safety throughout the project; and 6) Collaborate with Museum of Man staff for fundraising and grant writing. Qualifications and Requirements include: 1) Minimum of Bachelor's degree; 2) Project management experience; 3) Experience or training in moving museum collections, as well as a knowledge of collections management and collections documentation; 4) Computer skills, familiarity with museum management software; 5) Strong communication (both oral and written) skills; 6) Strong organizational skills with attention to detail; and 7) Fundraising and grant-writing experience a plus.
