Subject: Positions at Carnegie Mellon
Assistant Staff Scientist and Associate Staff Scientist The Art Conservation Research Center Carnegie Mellon University The Art Conservation Research Center at Carnegie Mellon University is accepting applications for two vacancies to do conservation science research at our center, an Assistant Staff Scientist and an Associate Staff Scientist. Both positions are available immediately. The Assistant Staff Scientist will conduct research on the off-gassing of peroxides from degrading polymers. Responsibilities will include using air sampling and fluorescence analysis as well as measuring solid-phase peroxides with infrared spectroscopy and chemical titrations. The assistant staff scientist will work as a fully functional member of a team that carries out the scientific and technical efforts related to the research projects defined by the director and deputy director. Qualified candidates for the Assistant position should have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and experience in Physical/Analytical Chemistry or Materials Science and at least one year of research experience with an emphasis in analytical method development and building/troubleshooting chemical apparatus. The candidate should have an interest in beginning or continuing a career in art conservation science. Familiarity with fluorescence spectroscopy, analytical instrumentation and air-sampling systems is desirable. The Associate Staff Scientist will conduct research on further development of the micro-scale color fading tester. This will include improving optical configurations of the light source both to make the device more compact as well as to minimize chromatic aberrations. The improved instrument will be used to study photobleaching of paper and canvas as well as exploring other areas of research that can benefit from the improved device. The associate staff scientist will work as a fully functional independent researcher that carries out the scientific and technical efforts related to research projects developed with consultation from the director and deputy director. Qualified candidates for the Associate position should have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and experience in Physical/Analytical Chemistry or Materials Science with at least three years of research experience with an emphasis in optical spectroscopies and instrument development. The candidate should have an interest in beginning or continuing a career in art conservation science. Familiarity with instrument development/optics and maintenance of instrumentation as well as experience in the use of optical spectroscopies such as FTIR, Raman and fluorescence is desirable. Interested applicants should apply online at Carnegie Mellon University's Careers web site by submitting a resume and cover letter for the Assistant Staff Scientist job (posting 4903) or Associate Staff Scientist job (posting 4876).
