Subject: Questionnaire on pop-up books
**** Moderator's comments: Please respond directly to the author. I am a student currently working towards an MA at West Dean College. The focus of my project is the conservation of movable or "pop-up" books. The practical portion of the thesis will involve testing adhesive strengths on coated papers often found in books of this kind as well as the possible need for surface preparation before adhesion. The following six questions aim to find out how other conservators are conserving pop-up books as well as to gather opinions on whether or not books of this kind should be conserved. What kinds of damage have you encountered in movable books? What kinds of treatments have you performed on movable books? Were the treatments you applied successful? Have you performed any conservation techniques on modern shiny coated papers? If yes, what kind of conservation was required? Did the surface require any preparation before adhesion? If yes what was used to prepare the surface? What is the library/institution/private conservator's opinion on the conservation of movable or pop-up books? Should they be conserved or left in their current state? Thank you very much for your help.
