Subject: Fellowship at Swiss Institute for Art Research
Conservation Science Fellowship Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK) Zurich The conservation department of the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK) in Zurich is seeking a Junior Researcher in Conservation Science to participate in an ongoing technical study of the painting technique and workshop practice of the Swiss painter Cuno Amiet (1868-1961). Written sources contain references to Amiet's use of self mixed tempera paints during his highly experimental early period, and some of his early paintings show bad degradation phenomena which seem to be associated with these experiments. Analytical characterisation of samples taken from a selection of his early paintings has begun to shed light on the complexity of these paint systems and the associated degradation phenomena. The Amiet study at SIK is therefore including a pilot project that will reconstruct some of his paint recipes and characterize their chemical alterations under influence of different environmental parameters. The pilot project is funded as part of the COST (European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) Action D42 entitled "Chemical Interactions between Cultural Artefacts and Indoor Environment" ("EnviArt"). It will take place in the scientific laboratories of SIK, Zurich and HKB, Bern for the duration of 1 year. This Fellowship will lead to a PhD research project. Qualifications: Successful candidates will hold, or should expect to obtain, a Masters Degree in chemistry or analytical chemistry, and a desire to work at the interface of chemistry, analytical chemistry and conservation science.
