Position at Te Papa

From: Vicki-Anne Heikell <vickih<-a>
Date: Friday, May 30, 2008
Conservator, Paintings
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Wellington, New Zealand

We are looking for an experienced paintings conservator to join Te
Papa's Conservation Team.

Te Papa has active acquisition, loan and touring programmes and a
regularly-changing exhibition programme for a large number of
galleries. Paintings conservators are involved in all these areas to
support the full appreciation and accessibility of the art
collection.

The Conservation Team of ten includes objects, textiles, paintings,
paper and preventive conservators. The two paintings conservators
also work closely with collection managers and curators and with
framers and transit preparators. The conservation labs and workrooms
are spacious and well equipped, and a central collections
information system, KE EMu, is used to manage collection processes
and documentation.

A recognised professional conservation qualification and minimum of
5 years' experience as a conservator in a Museum/Art Gallery
environment is essential for this position. You will enjoy working
co-operatively with other museum professionals, improving the
well-being of a collection and finding creative solutions to making
collections accessible in safe and culturally-appropriate ways. Te
Papa is a bicultural organisation--our conservators need to be able
to explore culturally-sensitive solutions to conservation issues and
respect cultural and community values.

You will be interested in both contemporary and traditional
paintings. Preventive conservation is important at Te Papa, but
remedial conservation is also an essential part of the role. It
will be useful to bring a range of remedial conservation techniques
to this role and demonstrate an ability to draw on new approaches.
