The Mariners' Museum
Monitor Conservation Fellowship, 2008-2009

In partnership with the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary program of
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, The Mariners'
Museum in Newport News, Virginia, is offering a conservation
fellowship for treatment of objects excavated from the wreck site of
the USS Monitor. The fellowship is a full-time (35 hours/week)
position for one year (July 2008-June 2009) and includes a stipend
of $21,000. Additional funding for travel may be available at the
discretion of the Museum's chief conservator.

The fellowship entails hands-on treatments of large, industrial,
composite objects such as pumps and motors. These objects were
submerged in saltwater for 140 years prior to excavation and thus
require specialized treatment. The fellow will gain experience in a
wide variety of analytical and treatment techniques while working on
objects from one of the most significant vessels in naval history.

Eligibility: The successful candidate for the position will be in
his/her final year of or have graduated from a recognized
conservation graduate or training program. Previous experience
working with metal artifacts recovered from a marine environment is
preferred.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required.
