Objects Conservator Conservation Technician The Cleveland Museum of Art Objects Conservator This full-time temporary position is available July 1 and can be renewed up to four years. Under the supervision of the Chief Conservator, this position will work in close collaboration with various departments and staff members (including the curatorial and conservation staff) to examine, document, and treat the Museum's vast and diverse object-based collections. In addition, the Objects Conservator works with the design and collection management departments to ensure proper handling, preparation, mounting and display of these collections. Duties will include overseeing as needed: collection photography for various purposes; packing art for transit; temporary and permanent installations. The position may also require couriering art to other institutions. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor's degree and has completed a graduate-level course of study in Conservation, or equivalent education and training, along with at least two years of experience working as an Object Conservator prior to application. The requirements of outstanding interpersonal, writing and organizational skills as well as the ability to work independently or in a team environment are essential. The applicant should have excellent hand skills and visual acuity and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. This temporary position is available July 1 and can be renewed up to four years. Under the supervision of the museum's Paper Conservator, the Conservation Technician will assist in the care of the Museum's print and drawing collections. Collection care tasks will include the preparation of works of art on paper for storage, transit and display. As such, the candidate must have a background in matting and framing and working in the capacity of a preparator/technician for works of art on paper. The Conservation Technician will be expected to become fully conversant in preparing works of art on paper to the highest museum standards: specifically the hinging and mounting of works of art on paper using museum quality materials and methods. The conservation technician will oversee as needed the handling of this collection including: installations; moving art for various purposes within the facility; maintaining prints and drawings storage; numbering works for registration purposes; monitoring light levels for display; packing for transit. Duties will also include assisting the paper conservator with incoming examinations and documentation reports and couriering works to other institutions as needed. Qualifications: BA or equivalent degree; a firm background in matting and framing works on paper; museum experience preferred. The candidate must have excellent manual/fine-hand skills and should be prepared to show samples of her/his work. The candidate must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
