Conference on Optical Coherence Tomography

From: Ludmila Tyminska Widmer <lutym<-a>
Date: Friday, May 2, 2008
Conference and workshop
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) for examination of art
Poland
3-5 July 2008

Co-organized by Institute of Phisics and Institute for the Study,
Restoration and
Conservation of Cultural Heritage of Nicolaus Copernicus University
in Torun,

The workshop is devoted to a new optical diagnostic method: Optical
Coherence Tomography, which originates from medicine and was adopted
to the examination of art objects. The technique is non-contact and
non-invasive and since its implementation in 2003 it has been used
successfully for investigation of such objects as paintings, jade
artefacts, porcelain and faience, glass and parchment. However, it
is possible that many fields of application remain still not
exploited.

Conference topics are:

Application of OCT to structural examination of paintings and
similar objects, historic glass and stained glass

OCT as a tool for monitoring of laser ablation of varnishes and
    similar coatings

Other applications for structural studies and monitoring of
    conservation treatment

OCT as a tool for monitoring of canvas surface deformation

Polarization sensitive OCT for materials science

Present and future of the OCT

Other relevant techniques (confocal microscopy, harmonics
    generation)

Other interferometric techniques (e.g. ESPI, Schlieren etc.)

To the great satisfaction of organisers, representatives of all
groups active in the filed of application of OCT for conservation
purposes will be present at the meeting. The programme and abstracts
of all invited lectures can be found at
<URL:http://www.oct4art.eu/programme>

The workshop is addressed to all who are using OCT for art
examination already, but also to everybody who is looking for a new,
non-invasive examination tool. During the conference a hands-on
session with the OCT instrument will be organized - everybody is
invited to bring own samples to try the method.

Participants are also encouraged to send short abstracts of their
prospective presentations to the organizers before June, 1 2008.
Authors of selected contributions will be invited to present them as
orals or posters.
