Subject: Survey on documentation
Mellon Conservation Documentation Survey The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has recently launched a study of the ways in which institutions use digital technology to record conservation documentation. Some museums do this within their collections management system, others have created independent conservation systems or are developing systems or modules that work with the CMS. The goal of the study will be to use the gathered information to assist the community in either developing or improving systems that will be more responsive to the needs of conservators, or informing the community about the existence of such systems under development. While this study is set within the context of a larger project assessing the challenges, opportunities and implications of digital documentation, we are now preparing to survey conservation departments worldwide about the specific tools and procedures they are using to manage conservation documentation in digital form. We invite and encourage you to participate in this technical survey, which will be available soon on a website to be announced. A report on the findings of the survey will be available by the end of the year.
