Screening Criteria:

Language: English Essential

Education: Graduation from a recognized conservation program at the
post secondary level or equivalent experience. Proof of education
will be required prior to appointment.

Experience:

    Significant experience in the conservation treatment of metal
    artifacts during the last two years.

    Significant experience in general conservation treatment during
    the last five years.

    Experience  monitoring and reporting on environmental conditions
    for artifact collections.

    Experience in condition assessment of artifacts.

    Experience writing technical input to reports or publications
    intended for conservation or other scientific professionals.

It is important that candidates clearly demonstrate to what degree
they meet the above experience elements, giving detailed examples
for EACH element.

Work environment: The Western and Northern Service Centre of the
Parks Canada Agency is a network of professional and technical
expertise established to support National Parks, National Historic
Sites and National Marine Conservation Areas in Western and Northern
Canada in the protection and presentation of cultural and natural
resources.

Challenges: As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Conservator II
conducts conservation treatments for a range of historic and
archaeological artifacts from national historic sites and parks in
Western and Northern Canada.  Fieldwork involves site visits to
assess artifact and environmental conditions as well as performing
treatments in-situ.  The Conservator II develops and delivers basic
conservation training to site staff, provides advice, and writes
technical reports and papers.

Organizational Needs which will apply for this position:

To achieve a representative workforce, initially selection may be

Conditions of employment:

    Willingness to undergo a Reliability Status security clearance.

    Possession of a valid Driver's license OR personal mobility to
    the extent normally associated with the possession of a valid
    Driver's license within the limits of the Treasury Board Policy.

    Operational requirements

        Travel and work in remote locations
        Travel in small aircraft and open boats
        Lifting of artifacts and equipment up to a weight of 30 kg
        Wear personal protective equipment

Notes:

    Candidates from outside the Federal Public Service may be
    required to pay for their own relocation expenses

    The Work Description is available upon request

    A written and/or practical exam may be administered
