PhD studentship at Centre de Recherche sur la Conservation des
Collections

The Centre de Recherche sur la Conservation des Collections /
'Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique' (CRCC/CNRS)
<URL:http://www.crcc.cnrs.fr in Paris is offering a PhD studentship
for three years.

The successful applicant will work under the guidance of scientists
from CRCC's and Universite d'Evry's (Laboratoire materiaux polymeres
aux interfaces) and is expected to complete a PhD dissertation and
produce one or more international journal publications.

The subject of the research will be to study the reinforcement and
deacidification of paper using aminoalkylalkoxysilanes (AAAS). The
aim is to achieve a protection strategy of the cellulosic fibre
network through a novel mass treatment solution applicable to
archival and library documents. It is assumed that a polysilane
network is formed at the nanometric level which penetrates the
fibres network (micrometric level) through polycondensation of
aminoalkylalkoxysilanols on the fibres surface. The aim of the
research will be to understand the physical and chemical processes
at the nanometric level which can explain the action of the AAAS on
the cellulose fibres. More specifically, the reinforcement mechanism
will be studied as well as the behaviour towards accelerated ageing.
Macromolecular aspects of the interaction of AAAS with cellulose
will be studied. The monthly stipend will be 1757 EUR.

Eligibility: Candidates should have a graduate degree in one of the
chemistry sciences, or equivalent training. The degree must have
been obtained within the last two years. Candidates must be familiar
with relevant scientific methods and instrumentation
(chromatographic and spectrometric). A strong interest in art
conservation is required and previous experience in art conservation
is desirable. French-language skills and a proven record of research
and writing ability are required.

Application procedure: Interested candidates must submit the
following materials in French or English:

Transcripts of both undergraduate and graduate courses of
academic study (unofficial copies are acceptable)

A curriculum vitae including basic biographical information,
current and permanent addresses, and telephone numbers

A short statement of the candidate's interests and intent in
    applying for the PhD

    Reprints of publications

Two letters of recommendation from professionals familiar with
    the candidate's work

All application material should be received no later than April 11,
2008 and should be submitted via e-mail to aldupont<-a t->mnhn< . >fr and to
herve.cheradame<-a t->univ-evry< . >fr

Documents should be in MS Word, RTF or PDF format.

Signed letters of recommendation should be sent to:
