Applied Colour Theory for Conservators

    This course aims to present and compare the view of the
    practising artist with the scientific description of colour and
    its use. Mark Cazalet is a successful artist who has worked with
    a range of media including paint, ceramics, glass, mosaic and
    tapestry, and has studied many of the theories of colour
    familiar to artists. David Dorning teaches science for
    conservators, covering both the visual effects of light and
    colour, and their degradative effects on objects. The course
    will combine both approaches and aim to identify areas of common
    understanding, in order to provide a framework in which
    conservators can develop their expertise in the application of
    colour to aspects such as colour matching for in-painting,
    dyeing and toning materials.

Ecclesiastical Metalwork

    Course Leader:  Jon Privett, Programme Leader, Conservation of
    Metalwork, West Dean College

    Spiritual, cultural, and monetary values are some of the
    significant factors that 'working' ecclesiastical metalwork is
    imbued with. This three-day course will examine the conservation
    issues of a range of religious metalwork and try to find a
    balance between the use of the object and the needs for its
    long-term survival.  The storage and display of objects too
    delicate for ceremonial use will be explored and mitigation
    strategies will be looked at to enable their occasional use and
    their display.

    Cost:  Non-residential course fee:  UKP330.
