Revised UK salary guidelines from Icon

Following research into the rates of pay for conservators in 2007,
Icon <URL:http://www.icon.org.uk has issued the following revised
guidelines on salaries for conservators working in the UK. Please
note that these figures do not take account of London weighting or
of any other benefits such as pensions plans or travel allowances.
At the request of Icon members in private practice, Icon does not
publish recommendations on rates for private conservators.

Employers seeking to recruit conservators should note the following:

1. Icon seeks to foster recognition of the responsibility held by
conservators in protecting and preserving the world's cultural
heritage. The high-level skills required for this vital role
should be recognised in status and salary levels. We recommend
that the minimum salary for conservators should be UKP20,895 and
for conservation technicians should be UKP17,000. We also
recommend that the stipend (not salary) for interns undertaking
    workbased learning be UKP14,000.

2. For the guidance of employers seeking to determine appropriate
salaries for conservators, we provide the following figures
which are averages of salaries in all conservation jobs
    advertised with Icon is 2007:

    *   Newly qualified conservator
        average UKP21,115

    * Qualification and some experience required
        average UKP23,443

    * Professional Accreditation (PACR) or considerable experience
        required
        average UKP27,351

    *   Senior/ management roles
        average UKP36.971

3. Starting salaries and career progression for conservators
employed in institutions should be no lower or more restricted
than for those alongside whom they work. Icon supports the
principle of parity across the heritage professions when
promoting the skills and value of conservators, curators,
librarians, archivists, archaeologists and historic buildings
    specialists.

4. Employers are encouraged to assist conservation staff to be
accredited under the Professional Accreditation of Conservator
Restorers (PACR) scheme run by Icon, the British Horological
Institute and the Society of Archivists. Employment of
accredited conservators is a mark of excellence in a heritage
service. Achievement of accredited status by conservators should
be recognised when identifying salary levels.
